- Tip 2Drive through your heels
- Tip 3Hold at the top
Where you should feel it
In your glutes, strongest at the top, and on the side of your hips, which hold your knees apart against the band.
- Main muscles
- Gluteus maximus and gluteus medius
- Also working
- Semitendinosus and semimembranosus, biceps femoris, and gluteus minimus
How to do it
Lie on your back on a mat with a mini band just above your knees, feet flat and hip-width apart, knees bent.
Press your knees slightly out against the band and keep that tension.
Drive through your heels and lift your hips until your shoulders, hips and knees line up, without letting your knees cave in.
Hold for 1 to 2 seconds at the top and lower slowly, knees still pressed apart.
Common mistakes
Mistake
Letting your knees collapse in as you lift.
How to fix it
Keep your knees in line with your feet the whole time. If the band wins, use a lighter one.
Mistake
Arching your lower back at the top.
How to fix it
Only rise until your hips line up with your thighs, ribs down.
Mistake
The band sliding up your thighs or down below your knees.
How to fix it
Keep the band just above your knees and reset it before each set.
